A group of PAWED members and some other Desert Racing enthusiasts have built a Class 11/40 race car. This class of race car, better known as the “Underdog class”, is the most limited and difficult to finish a race in.  Similar to the difficulties faced by so many homeless animals in shelters across the nation! The group has named themselves the "Team Desert Dawgs" and logoed the race car with “SAVE  A LIFE-- Adopt a Shelter Pet”.

The goal of the Team Desert Dawgs is to have fun racing while at the same time bringing awareness to the plight of shelter animals.  Team Desert Dawgs has generously dedicated their race car and racing to raise funds for the PAWED mobile spay/neuter clinic!  They will raise funds in two ways:

1. Sell paw print decals that will be placed on the car and can be used by businesses to advertise, or by private individuals to display a personal message, such as family name, in honor or in memory of a beloved pet, etc.  Paw print decals are $500 each.  The race car will be displayed at many community events and local races, prior to the big race (see item #2 below).  Download Paw print decal order form.

2. Sign up sponsors who will collect pledges –either a per mile pledge or a flat rate—for Team Desert Dawg’s participation in the August  2008 Las Vegas to Reno Off Road Race, a 700 mile race across the desert!  This race is longest and most grueling or "growling "race in the United States and gets worldwide exposure from the Outdoor Channel and other printed media.  Team Desert Dawgs is calling this their “Race for Homeless Pets”! Download the pledge form.

One hundred percent of the paw print decal sales and the sponsorships will be used for the PAWED mobile spay/neuter clinic!  If you would like to purchase a paw print decal for the car, or would like to receive a Sponsor pledge form, please contact PAWED at 530-677-2476.

Keep checking back here to get the latest on the adventures, locations and fundraising by the Team Desert Dawgs.  They will have a howling good time getting ready for their Race for Homeless Pets!

Update 5-14-08

The Team Desert Dawgs was in Las Vegas for the running of the Historic Mint 400 off road race  the week of April 20th.  We met with the staff and toured the new Las Vegas Animal Shelter  being run by the non- profit group The Animal Foundation.  (animalfoundation.com). We kicked off a fundraiser for the Animal Foundation that is similar to the one that we are doing currently for PAWED.

Our race car was also selected to be highlighted in a display of race cars on the Historic Fremont Street Experience and was seen by an estimated ten thousand visitors and had a brief spot on MSNBC.  We handed out our Team Post Cards and Petfinder.com bumper stickers and talked to so many people about companion animals.

The race was scheduled to be three hundred miles for our class.  With  PAWED member and mobile clinic mechanic, John Malick,  and his co-driver, Jack Covert of Elk Grove at the wheel and navigating we were sixth off the startline.   Many cars were passed in the first half hour or so, but, at about mile thirty-two, the transmission failed.  They were able to get the car to the parking lot of the Terribles Casino in Primm, NV where the transmission was declared broken beyond repair.  While disappointed at the early end of the race for Team Desert Dawgs, we were satisfied that we were able raise funds for the local Las Vegas shelter and have the "Adopt a Homeless Pet" be seen by so many people.

Since returning from Las Vegas we are now partnered with PETFINDER.com and the Greg Biffle (NASCAR ) Animal Foundation.   The race car has been re-logoed with the PETFINDER.com "Adopt a Homeless Pet" and the Greg Biffle Foundation logos.  This change will highlight the petfinder website where people can easily look for companion animals.  At any given time the PETFINDER.com site has over 250,000 animals being housed by over 13,000 shelters and rescue groups.

The team is now gearing up for the the August 22nd and 23rd Las Vegas to Reno Off Road Race, the longest off road race in the United States!  The race this year is over 550 miles in length.  Starting in Pahrump, NV we will travel north by the historic mining town of Tonapah.  We will continue through the Silver Peak Mountain Range, through Mina, Silver Springs, Hawthorne, Fallon and finishing in the Dayton area, near Reno, Nevada. All of this without ever being on paved roads.   We estimate the time to complete the race at about twenty-six hours straight.

Friends and fans can monitor the team’s progress the days of the race by logging on to www.racetheworld,com website and selecting our car, #1833.   An Iridium satellite phone in the racecar will instantly log our position on a map of the course through Nevada.
