PAWED MOBILE SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC UPDATE: Fall 2011

The PAWED mobile spay/neuter clinic continues to operate at the El Dorado County Animal Services shelter to alter animals from the county shelters in Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. Spay/neuter clinics are held every Tuesday, and we average about 35 operations each day. Between January 27, 2009, when we began surgeries of the shelter animals, and September 30, 2011, 1035 dogs/puppies, 1369 cats/kittens, and 77 other small animals have been altered in the clinic - a total of 2481 shelter animals!

Dr. Shirley Harman continues to do an excellent job of performing the spays/neuters, with the expert assistance of EDCAS Animal Services Officer and RVT, Patti Perry, and shelter staff Danielle, Sara and Brittany. Several improvements continue to be made inside the clinic to respond to the needs of the clinic staff and animals, and Jeff Lee, John Malick and Bill Smith continue to maintain the vehicle so it is in tip top shape!

PAWED Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Debuts with First Day in Georgetown - July 17, 2011

The PAWED mobile clinic made it's first debut in Georgetown on Sunday, July 17, 2011! This clinic was targeted to large dogs only, and we offered the spay/neuter service for $10 per dog. The clinic medical staff included Randy Robinson, DVM (Missouri Flat Pet Clinic) and his RVT, Ysabel Baca and Vet Assistant, Shannon Quinn--all of whom volunteered their time to do this! Joining them were 10 PAWED volunteers for intake, recovery supervision, clinic maintenance/operations, and release of the dogs back to their.

A total of 14 large dogs were scheduled. Our first customer was a beautiful 80 lb. female mastiff named Willow. Polar, a 150 lb. male Anatolian shepherd was our second customer--so we started out with really large ones! From there it was a steady stream of dogs--equal number of females and males-- coming in according to their scheduled time, going into our holding crates waiting for surgery, surgery, and then lifted out on slings and carried into our recovery area inside the library. WOW, what an experience watching all these big dogs going in for surgery, being carried out to recovery, and their recovery at different rates. We needed every volunteer we had to do this and thank goodness several additional volunteers showed up and stayed all day--or we could not have done it all! Dr. Robinson and staff worked diligently throughout the day spaying and neutering these dogs and came out of the clinic periodically to check on the recovery and to talk to families as the dogs were released.

Willow, our first, had a difficult recovery and Dr. Robinson believes she had a reaction to the anesthesia. She ended up being there most the day with her owner sitting with her outside until Dr. Robinson was sure that she had stabilized and was fine to go home. In this process, one of our volunteers called a local vet who personally delivered some anti nausea meds to our clinic for Willow. It was Teamwork in action!

We adjusted the schedule as we started to run behind, and all the families were happy to hold their dogs in their car til we had a vacant holding crate, or to bring them a little later. Everyone showed up on time, and over and over expressed their gratefulness to us for doing this. Wonderful people and great dogs. The last dog, a very sweet 5 yr. old lab/golden ret. named Lucy --went home at 6 p.m.

THIS DAY was a testament to all of our hard work for the past 5 years to get our mobile clinic into the community. All the meetings, discussion, fundraising, clinic renovation, purchase of equipment & supplies, recruiting staffing, etc. Our members, volunteers, donors and supporters made this happen! It shows the power of our collective passion and commitment to make change--to make this a community where eventually there are no more homeless pets. Yes it has been a long road to get here and there is a long road ahead--but it is truly worth every minute! We look forward to our next clinic in Georgetown, which is already booked, on August 21!

Second Mobile Clinic in Georgetown: August 21, 2011

It was another great day in Georgetown on Sunday, August 21. The PAWED mobile spay/neuter clinic team arrived at 6 a.m., began surgeries at 7 a.m. and worked until 6:30 p.m. to spay/neuter 16 dogs! PAWED thanks the 20 volunteers, including the veterinary team of Dr. Randy Robinson, Andrea Gavin, RVT and Shannon Quinn, Vet Asst., who contributed to this very successful and busy day!

Our next clinic is scheduled for September 18 in Georgetown, and is already full. Future clinics are scheduled there Oct. 16 and Nov. 20.

Third Mobile Clinic in Georgetown: September 18, 2011

The third PAWED mobile spay/neuter clinic in Georgetown was held Sunday, September 18. Volunteers started arriving at 6 a.m., including Tonya Ruffner (former El Dorado County Animal Shelter supervisor) who served as our RVT for the day! Aside from a few glitches in equipment to start, and the fact that it was Founder's Day in Georgetown which presented additional challenges, the day went perfectly. A total of 14 dogs, ranging in size from 85 lbs to 20 lbs, including 8 females and 6 males, were altered!

Fourth Mobile Clinic: October 16th, 2011

Our 4th clinic was held Sunday October 16th and all went very well. It was a beautiful day and a total of 14 dogs were spayed/neutered: 7 females and 7 males.

Fifth Mobile Clinic: November 20th, 2011

Our 5th and last clinic in Georgetown for the year was held Sunday, Nov. 20. This one was quite a challenge as the weather was cold and rainy and we were not certain if snow in Georgetown would prevent us getting the clinic up there. But luck prevailed, and the clinic and all our volunteers made it! The day was filled with surgeries for 13 dogs of all shapes and sizes, with two over 100 lbs.

This 5th clinic closes our first chapter of the PAWED mobile clinic providing low cost spay/neuter services in a targeted outlying community in the county. A total of 70 dogs were altered in these five clinics! We are very grateful for the dedication of the many PAWED volunteers who helped make these clinics a reality. A very special thanks to Dr. Randy Robinson, Ysabel Baca, RVT, Andrea Gavin, RVT, Tonya Ruffner, RVT, and Shannon Quinn, vet assistant who volunteered their time and veterinary expertise to perform the surgeries. And another special thanks to Jeff Lee, who drove the clinic back and forth and insured that everything in the clinic was in tip top working order! And we could not have conducted these clinics in Georgetown without the help of Kris Moore, Divide Humane Society, and the generous donation of the use of a portion of the Georgetown library for recovery of dogs by Andy and Cheryl Anderson.

PAWED looks forward to our second chapter, which we anticipate will be in the Spring 2012, after the winter weather has passed, in the Grizzly Flats/Somerset area. Stay tuned for further updates!
